Internship day 10
Monday morning found me back at St. Mary's School for another day of my teaching internship. I was assigned to the 9th grade science class during second hour, where we delved into the Rutherford model of the atom.
To bring the concept to life, I prepared a mix of visual aids and hands-on activities. We started by watching a few short videos that explained the historical context and significance of Rutherford's experiments. The students seemed engaged, asking thoughtful questions about how this model differed from previous atomic theories.
Next, we moved on to some interactive demonstrations. I brought in some simple materials to create physical models of atoms based on Rutherford's ideas. The students worked in small groups, constructing their own representations of atomic structure. It was rewarding to see them collaborating and discussing the key features of the model as they worked.
As the lesson wrapped up, we had a brief class discussion where students shared their models and explained how they illustrated Rutherford's key discoveries. I was impressed by how well they grasped the main concepts and could articulate them in their own words.
At noon, my duties shifted as I helped with lunch service. I joined the cafeteria staff in serving food to the students. It was a busy but enjoyable time, chatting with the kids and ensuring everyone got their meals. This part of the day offered a different perspective on school life and the importance of meeting students' basic needs to support their learning.
Overall, it was a fulfilling day that highlighted the diverse responsibilities of teachers - from planning engaging lessons to supporting students outside the classroom. I'm looking forward to what the rest of this internship will bring!
